WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I SPOKE TO DAVE MUSTAINE OF MEGADETH LAST NIGHT?

Ketika wawancara berlangsung Dave sedang menyetir mobil menuju sekolah anaknya, Justis. “Now you know that I’m a real dad, not just a crazy metalhead,” ujarnya sambil tertawa.

Kami berbicara selama 30 menit tentang berbagai hal, kecuali:

  • Metallica is a TABOO subject.
  • All journalists need to stick to the topic of the new album.
  • Questions about the new members are OK, but no questions about former Megadeth members.
  • The  interviews also need to be stopped on time according to the schedule (no running over time), so basically whoever is monitoring needs to say "we have time for one more question" towards the end of the interview.
  • No questions about religion.

Yeah, fuck those rules.

But don’t get me wrong, MegaDave himself is a very humble-loving-care-asshole-kind of person J

Well, here comes the bollocks….

Hello Dave, this is Wendi from Rolling Stone Indonesia

Hey Wendi, how are you, buddy?

I’m fine, thank you. Well, it’s been a long time since you guys blasted Medan several years a go….

Yeah. Know what, I remember being there…. It’s not one of those memories that refresh in my mind like yesterday, but yeah, I remember very clearly like it was maybe last week, if you know what I mean [laughing]

Yes, I was there too. I’ve met you in the press conference…

Yeah, that was an intense press conference…

Right, you’ve had an argue with our local journos there [laughing]

I mean, to be honest, I’m not like that, I’m a pretty happy guy, you know. It was weird, it was like…. because they think I don’t respect your country or that I’m some kind of a bad dude… I was happy to be there and it’s kind of flying side of me, you know what I mean? I’m really looking forward to go out and back there, afterall, the fans were great, fantastic.

I hope that’s not the only thing that you remember the most about Indonesia hehehe…

No, no, no, no…. That was just a frickle. I don’t even think about that. I think about my friend, Tommy, our promoter overthere. Getting food, going through the city, it’s really neat because our culture were so fall apart as far as I can… It’s like you living in the city and being the opposite side of the globe and then suddenly you close your eyes and standing next to you guys and having fun there that we would be in another city on the opposite side of the planet you know… That to me was so exciting and just to know that rock & roll and heavy metal lives there, know that so many people dig that kind of music, it’s very exciting for me.

Yeah, cool. Seven years a go you played in Medan, so what do you expect from Jakarta’s crowd later?

I don’t know the difference between the two crowds. As far as I know, I don’t think it’s gonna be that much of a different. You maybe able to tell me better than what I know…

Coz’ you know what, Jakarta is the capital city and your fanbase is very strong here rather in Medan. Not so many Jakarta fans were lucky and had enough money to flew to Medan back then. FYI, Metallica performed in front of almost 100,000 people in their two dates in Jakarta… although it was 15 years a go [laughing]

[laughing] Oh, great. And that’s gonna be the better, you know what… We were just maintaining again our relationship with your country and being able to come there and play, so that’s not just, hey, we do one show and we’re outta there. And I know that the economy down there is different from ours and that make the ticket prices were expensive so that make the fans, they have to work extra hard to be able to afford a ticket to see a concert. And in some cases, you know, even that happened in America, the fans sometimes have to make a decision between… “Do I pay my electricity bill or do I go to a concert?

Hehehe…

Yeah, coz you know what, Wendi, our music appeals to people who were the majority of the earth, you know whatta mean? Go grab some music, people like U2 or Barbara Streissand can appeal to the upper-classes, snobs and stuff like that… While we like our music to appeal to regular normal people….

OK, cool… You played 25 songs in Medan years a go, what about Jakarta then?

Yeah, we’re gonna be playing a lot of songs, but we’re not gonna be playing that long because it’s the way the festival is set up, the time that we’re allowed. Last time we playing for two hours, this time for only 90 minutes. But 90 minutes with Megadeth is like two hours with somebody else, trust me.

Hahaha… More intense rather than before, uh? So what other kind of promises you could keep with Jakarta’s crowd?

This line-up it’s better than the line-up that we came once before. I’m sure that you’ve seen our website Megadeth.com and MySpace site that there’s a lot of Indo-fans that on our website and they’re all talk about it. In fact, they’re also get the chance to read all of the feedback from the fans that have seen this new line-up. Plus they get to talk to us on our phone, so they can leave a message on our cell-phone.

More classic or newest songs on the Jakarta’s set list?

I like playing both because there’s really heavy old songs -[suddenly coughing], excuse me, Wendi- that sounds great live. And there’s a lot of new one that we’ll playing because obviously we’re supporting the new record. Some of the new one are so exciting for us to play. It just feels like the good ol’ days when everything was fine and you know, everybody was having a good time, and everybody was successful and happy…

Oh yeah? Why? Do you think the good ol’ days were over now?

Uhmm….

# THE END #

Well, just go and steal a copy of the newest edition of Rolling Stone Indonesia everywhere near you. It’s on December. Ha!

BTW, they gonna hit Jakarta on October 25th 2007 at Tennis Outdoor Senayan.

Have you buy yourself a ticket? Coz there will be no third coming. It just didn’t worked out well here. Trust me!

  10. Nice piece of interview. You nailed it, bro :-)

By the way, MegaDave adalah Dave McRobb, webmaster-nya MegadetH.

Thanks for spreading the words! See ya all on the 25th. Nyari teman nih...
